The Apulian White Towns
The Apulian White Towns is a 6-day, 5-night self-guided cycling tour based in San Vito dei Normanni, near Brindisi, with easy to moderate stages through the Itria Valley and northern Salento. You ride past the Torre Guaceto nature reserve to Ostuni, the White Town, then through Cisternino and Locorotondo to the trulli of Alberobello. The last days take in Martina Franca, Ceglie Messapica and the castles of Mesagne and Oria.

- Day 1
San Vito dei Normanni
Arrive at your own pace in San Vito dei Normanni, in the northern part of the Salento peninsula, about half an hour from Brindisi. Set among olive groves and vineyards, a few minutes from the Torre Guaceto nature reserve and the Adriatic, its lanes hide Baroque churches, palazzi, a medieval castle and plenty of good restaurants, cafés and pizzerias. Overnight in San Vito dei Normanni.

San Vito dei Normanni – Ostuni

After the bike handover and route briefing, a short ride through the old centre of San Vito, with its square and castle, leads to the Torre Guaceto nature reserve, a protected stretch of coast with a marine reserve home to sea turtles, wetlands, dunes and sandy beaches. You continue via Carovigno and its castle to Ostuni, the White Town. Overnight in Ostuni.

Ostuni – Alberobello

Short but hilly: today you ride over the hills of the Itria Valley, between woods, vineyards and endless olive groves dotted with the conical roofs of trulli. You pass the white towns of Cisternino and Locorotondo before reaching Alberobello, the capital of the trulli, where you can choose to sleep in one of these traditional houses. Overnight in Alberobello.

Alberobello – San Vito dei Normanni

This morning you ride to Martina Franca, with its Baroque historic centre, and on to Ceglie Messapica, known as the Apulian capital of gastronomy. A pleasant route through the countryside then brings you back to San Vito dei Normanni. Overnight in San Vito dei Normanni.

San Vito dei Normanni – Mesagne – Oria – San Vito dei Normanni

A flat loop takes you south to Mesagne and Oria, two towns dominated by their imposing castles, including Oria's Swabian castle of Frederick II. On the way back to San Vito dei Normanni you stop in Francavilla Fontana. Overnight in San Vito dei Normanni.

Questions about this tour
How long is the tour and how much does it cost?
6 days and 5 nights, from €770 per person in the Economy category (B&Bs and 3* hotels, low season, double room). The Deluxe category with 4*/5* hotels starts at €1,095.
Where does the tour start and end, and how do I get there?
It starts and ends in San Vito dei Normanni, about half an hour from Brindisi, so Brindisi airport is the most convenient; Bari airport is also an option. Airport transfers are not included but can be arranged on request.
How difficult is it and how many kilometres will I ride?
Easy to moderate: 210 km over 4 riding days of 38–72 km, with up to 615 m of climbing on the short Ostuni – Alberobello stage. Regular cycling fitness is enough, and an e-bike helps on the hills.
When is the best time to go?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal, and the tour can be booked all year with low, mid and high season prices. From 1 to 24 August a supplement of €185 (Economy) or €360 (Deluxe) per person applies.
Which bikes are available? Can I ride an e-bike?
Yes. A touring or gravel bike is included, and you can switch to an e-bike for €115 or to a road bike for €55.
