The Hellenic Way – from Alberobello to Brindisi

The Hellenic Way is an 8-day, 7-night self-guided walking tour of moderate level from Alberobello to Brindisi, across the Itria Valley to the Adriatic coast of Puglia. From the trulli of Alberobello you walk through Locorotondo, Cisternino, Ostuni “the White Town”, the plain of ancient olive trees and the Torre Guaceto nature reserve to Brindisi, the port where the Via Appia ended and pilgrims once set sail for the Holy Land.
Day-by-day itinerary
- Day 1
Alberobello

Arrival in Alberobello, the “capital of the trulli” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Its old town is made up entirely of these unique dry-stone buildings with conical roofs, perfect for a first evening stroll. Overnight in Alberobello.
- Day 2
Alberobello – Locorotondo
23 km · +196 m
Soon after Alberobello you pass the hamlet of Coreggia, then a long path along the Apulian Aqueduct skirts a spectacular doline and crosses a natural oasis where an ancient oak grove survives. Country lanes lined with trulli lead to Locorotondo, the “round place”, whose circular old town keeps its cummerse houses with sloping roofs of limestone slabs. About 6 hours of walking. Overnight in Locorotondo.
- Day 3
Locorotondo – Cisternino
15.7 km · +209 m
Locorotondo sits on a hill covered with terraced native vineyards. You walk on country lanes and paths between dry-stone walls and trulli, and about halfway you join the Apulian Aqueduct cycle path, which follows the main channel of the aqueduct through unspoilt nature. Cisternino, with its narrow alleys, small squares and tiny houses, still keeps its old rural charm (4–5 hours). Overnight in Cisternino.
- Day 4
Cisternino – Ostuni
19.6 km · +191 m
Quiet countryside leads you through the classic Itria Valley landscape of old tratturi (sheep tracks), small woods, trulli and fields bounded by dry-stone walls, whose building technique UNESCO lists as intangible heritage. A series of paths brings you down to the olive groves of the coastal plain and past the Archaeological Park of Santa Maria di Agnano, where the famous pregnant woman of Ostuni, who died 25,000 years ago, was found. Ostuni, “the White Town”, awaits at the end of the day (about 5 hours). Overnight in Ostuni.
- Day 5
Ostuni – Carovigno
19.6 km · +193 m
Today's stage crosses the Plain of Ancient Olive Trees, home to the oldest olive trees in Puglia, some of them more than 2,000 years old. These living monuments keep you company all day, in a landscape that is a sacred place of Mediterranean civilisation, until you reach Carovigno (about 5 hours). Overnight in Carovigno.
- Day 6
Carovigno – Serranova
13.3 km · +66 m
You leave Carovigno and its old town, dominated by the Dentice di Frasso castle, on a path lined with eucalyptus and Mediterranean scrub, enjoying the silence of the countryside and the breeze from the nearby Adriatic. A plain of ancient olive trees, prickly pears and country villas leads to the small rural village of Serranova, where a stop at Tonino's traditional grocery is a must. The shortest stage, about 3 hours. Overnight in Serranova.
- Day 7
Serranova – Brindisi
26.3 km · +72 m
A dirt road among olive trees and prickly pears takes you to the Torre Guaceto nature reserve, then you walk south along the Adriatic coast for about 10 km on the line of the ancient Via Traiana and Via Francigena. Just before Brindisi you pass the medieval church of Santa Maria del Casale; the city, once a major port for the Holy Land, still keeps the Roman column that marks the end of the Via Appia (6–7 hours). Overnight in Brindisi.
- Day 8
Brindisi
Breakfast and end of our services. Goodbye, Puglia!
