The Coast of Trulli is an 8-day, 7-night self-guided walking tour from Fasano to Alberobello, easy to moderate, following stretches of the Via Francigena along the Adriatic coast of Puglia and into the Itria Valley. You walk past the Roman town of Egnazia to Monopoli and Polignano a Mare, then inland to medieval Conversano, the Castellana Caves and carnival town Putignano, finishing among the UNESCO-listed trulli of Alberobello.
Day-by-day itinerary
- Day 1
Fasano
Arrival in Fasano, on the border between Salento and the Land of Bari, surrounded by olive groves, orchards, vineyards and large masserie. Its historic centre is a maze of narrow streets and whitewashed houses, ideal for a first evening walk. Overnight in Fasano.
- Day 2
Fasano – Savelletri – Monopoli

After the briefing, a member of our staff drives you from your accommodation in Fasano to Savelletri, where you start walking on one of the oldest roads in Europe, the Via Francigena. Along the way you can visit the Archaeological Park of Egnazia, the most extensive example of a Roman town in Puglia, where stretches of the Via Appia-Traiana are still visible. The path leads straight to Monopoli and its 16th-century castle on the sea (about 5 hours). Overnight in Monopoli.

Monopoli – Polignano a Mare

Today's route also follows the Via Francigena, which, unlike the Via Appia, runs right along the coast and in ancient times saved a day's walk. You pass coves of golden sand and Ponte Sella, a natural rock arch above the blue Adriatic, before reaching Polignano a Mare, the pearl of the Adriatic. Stop at its balconies over the sea and take a photo with the statue of Domenico Modugno, the singer of “Volare” (about 3 hours). Overnight in Polignano a Mare.

Polignano a Mare – Conversano

The walk first reaches the small fishing village of San Vito and its pretty harbour, once controlled by the Benedictine monks of the abbey that houses the relics of Saint Vitus and an underground Roman-era oil mill. A Roman column on the rocks reminds you that you are walking on a Roman road, and a 16th-century coastal tower recalls the defences against Saracen raids. Inland, the road climbs to the medieval town of Conversano, today a city of art (about 4 hours). Overnight in Conversano.

Conversano – Castellana Grotte

Conversano was the seat of the Acquaviva d'Aragona counts, whose castle displays the 17th-century canvases of Paolo Finoglio's “Gerusalemme Liberata” cycle. From the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta the route plunges into lush countryside and leads to Castellana Grotte, famous for its caves discovered in 1938 by the speleologist Franco Anelli (about 5 hours). Overnight in Castellana Grotte.

Castellana Grotte – Putignano

The short stage leaves time to visit the Castellana Caves, a karst system that stretches for 3,348 m and reaches 122 m below the surface, open all year: we recommend booking the guided tour of the full itinerary (about 3 km, 1.5 hours, on rocky and wet ground). The walk then takes you to Putignano, known throughout Italy for one of the country's most celebrated carnivals (about 3 hours of walking). Overnight in Putignano.

Putignano – Alberobello

From the historic centre of Putignano you enter the Itria Valley, the land of the trulli, the dry-stone buildings known all over the world. The finish is Alberobello, symbol of this architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where trulli fill two whole districts and even a church, Sant'Antonio da Padova (about 5 hours). Overnight in Alberobello.

How long is the Coast of Trulli walk and how much does it cost?
8 days / 7 nights, from € 995 per person in a double room in low season. Mid season costs € 1,100 and high season € 1,170 per person.
Where does the walk start and end, and how do I get there?
It starts in Fasano and ends in Alberobello, both within reach of Bari and Brindisi airports. Airport transfers are not included but can be arranged on request; the short transfer from Fasano to Savelletri on day 2 is included.
How difficult is it and how many kilometres do I walk?
Easy to moderate: about 89.5 km over 6 walking days, from 10 to 19 km a day and 3 to 5 hours of walking. The most climbing is 374 m on the short Castellana Grotte – Putignano stage.
When is the best time to go, and are there seasonal supplements?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the most pleasant seasons for walking in Puglia. Prices follow low, mid and high season, and an August supplement applies from 1 to 24 August.
What kind of paths will I walk on, and what shoes do I need?
Coastal dirt tracks on the Via Francigena, country lanes and quiet paved roads inland. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with good grip are recommended, also for the rocky and wet floor of the Castellana Caves; you only carry a daypack, because your luggage is transferred for you.
Is luggage transfer included, and how do I find the way?
