The Trajan Way by Bike is a 7-day, 6-night self-guided gravel tour in Puglia from Trani to Brindisi, retracing the Roman road built by Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd century AD, with five easy-to-moderate stages between the inland towns and the Adriatic coast. You ride through the cathedral towns of Andria, Corato and Ruvo di Puglia, lively Bari, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, the Roman site of Egnazia and Ostuni, finishing at the Roman column in Brindisi.
Day-by-day itinerary
- Day 1
Trani
Arrive at your own pace in Trani, a charming town on the Adriatic. Stroll through the medieval lanes around the fishing harbour, lined with bars, cafés and fish restaurants, and visit the cathedral dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, one of the finest examples of Apulian Romanesque. Overnight in Trani.

Trani – Ruvo di Puglia

After the bike handover and briefing you leave the sea behind and ride inland between vineyards and olive groves. You pass the medieval towns of Andria and Corato and finish in Ruvo di Puglia, known for its striking Romanesque cathedral and its precious ceramics. Overnight in Ruvo di Puglia.

Ruvo di Puglia – Bari

An easy ride takes you back to the Adriatic through Terlizzi and Giovinazzo and their charming old centres. Bari, Puglia's capital, has two faces: the elegant Murat district and the colours and flavours of Bari Vecchia, where you can taste panzerotti, sgagliozze and popizze and watch the local women making orecchiette in Via Arco Basso. Overnight in Bari.

Bari – Polignano a Mare

A pleasant coastal ride leads to Mola di Bari and then to Polignano a Mare, the Pearl of the Adriatic, whose whitewashed old town stands on a cliff above crystal-clear water. It is also the hometown of Domenico Modugno, the singer of “Volare” – you may find yourself humming it along the sea-view lanes. Overnight in Polignano a Mare.

Polignano a Mare – Ostuni

Along the coast you soon reach Monopoli, with its old harbour and castle on the sea. Next comes the Archaeological Park of Egnazia, a busy Roman port crossed by the Via Traiana, whose traces can still be seen today. From Savelletri you head inland through ancient olive trees up to Ostuni, the White Town. Overnight in Ostuni.

Ostuni – Brindisi
50 km · +180 m
You pass Carovigno and its medieval castle, then ride through olive groves to the sea at the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve, a protected marine area. A coastal route leads to Brindisi, the city of two castles, where the Roman column on the seafront marks the end of the Via Appia-Traiana. Overnight in Brindisi.

How long is the tour and how much does it cost?
7 days and 6 nights, from €1,000 per person in the Economy category (B&Bs and 3* hotels, low season, double room). The Deluxe category with 4*/5* hotels starts at €1,300.
Where does the tour start and end, and how do I get there?
It starts in Trani and ends in Brindisi. Bari airport is the most convenient for arrival and Brindisi airport for your flight home; airport transfers are not included but can be arranged on request.
How difficult is it and how many kilometres will I ride?
Easy to moderate: 247 km in 5 riding days, between 45 and 55 km a day with 150 to 450 m of climbing. Regular cycling fitness is enough; experience on mixed surfaces helps.
When is the best time to go?
Spring and autumn are ideal. In 2026 low season runs 7 Jan–31 Mar, 7 Apr–31 May and 21 Sep–21 Dec; from 1 to 24 August a supplement of €215 (Economy) or €435 (Deluxe) per person applies.
Which bikes are available? Can I ride an e-bike?
Yes. A gravel bike with aluminium frame, carbon fork, disc brakes, 28" wheels and rear rack is included, and an e-bike is available for €140.
